The Mars Volta have made a surprise return today, sharing the video for their first new song in over a decade Blacklight Shine.

The release of Blacklight Shine follows two days of teasing from the progressive post-hardcore band who set up a surprise audio-visual art installation in Los Angeles' Grand Park.  Referred to as Voltacube it plays previously unheard music from the formerly disbanded act. The group officially calls it L'YTOME HODORXÍ TELESTERIO. The partially spanish-language Blacklight Shine is The Mars Volta's first new release since Noctourniquet dropped in 2012.

Vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Rodriguez-Lopez formed The Mars Volta after At The Drive-In imploded in 2001.  At the Drive-In bandmate, Jim Ward subsequently formed Sparta. The two drastically different directions musically, provide context to some of the differences that resulted in their less than amicable split. To date, The Mars Volta have released six studio albums.  Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez have also performed as the garage rock band Antimasque

The Mars Volta were last seen in Australia in August 2011. At The Drive-In were last in Australia in 2017.
