The connection between pro wrestling and metal is a storied one.  That story may be on the brink of getting an epic new chapter if a flippant challenge thrown down by Slipknot and Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor to WWE Superstar 'The Viper' Randy Orton turns (scripted) violent.

Taylor appears to be hunting a match with the master of the RKO, who is rumoured to return from a lengthy injury lay-off shortly. In a backstage video taken at one of Slipknot's recent shows, Taylor teases the prospect of stepping into the squared circle with Orton saying "That's right. I got something to tell you, Randy Orton!" "Do you think you're going to come and get this belt from me?" "You got another thing coming!" "Come this time tomorrow — MSG, Madison Square Garden. We 'bout to get down, motherfucker! Yeah!"

While the specific date mentioned by Taylor, is not feasible due to a clash with Slipknot's headline show in Lisbon, Portugal, we wouldn't put it beyond the WWE taking Tayor up on his offer and making a match of some kind happen down the line. Doing so would be very in-keeping with both the current WWE product, which has featured memorable work from celebrities in recent years including Bad Bunny, Logan Paul, MGK and Jackass' cast member Steve-O, and the long history between pro-wrestling and metal. It would also tie in well with current WWE head of creative, Paul 'Triple H' Levesque's love of metal.

While we don't have a lot of evidence as to Taylor's suitability for the physical elements of such an event, we do know that he has the mouth, the mind and the mic skills required to build a feud, and an eight-man masked posse who could back him up, should he talk his way into a fight he can't talk his way back out of.

Taylor has dabbled in the world of WWE before, slapping Baron Corbin at an NXT event back in 2015, so he's not without form.

Watch that moment, one of our ten best metal moments in wrestling history below.

The metal world of course also provides many of the best wrestling entrance themes of all time, with this in mind we asked several giants of the genre, what their WrestleMania entrance song would be, with the likes of Jacob Bannon (Vocalist, Converge), Paulo Gregoletto (Bass player, Trivium), Keith Buckley (Vocalist, Every Time I Die), Dave Murray (Guitarist, Iron Maiden) and more providing some truly remarkable choices.

Slipknot have announced that their iconic 2009 headline show at Madison Square Garden will be released on vinyl this August.

Set for release on August 18th, the 2LP Live at MSG  will mark the first time the show has ever been made available on vinyl. Considered a landmark moment by both band and fans, the Live at MSG performance saw the band take over the 'Word's Greatest Arena', filling it with maggots and treating them to a night they'd never forget. Live at MSG serves as a time capsule for a moment in which Slipknot were celebrating their first ever US #1 album All Hope Is Gone.

A pristine recording of the band at their most visceral, Live at MSG took place eight months and nine countries into the All Hope Is Gone world tour, and showcases the group in jaw-dropping form. The release will also commemorate the 15th anniversary of All Hope Is Gone. The artwork for the Live at MSG release was created by Slipknot percussionist and creative visionary, M Shawn (Clown) Crahan The 2LP black vinyl Live at MSG is available to pre-order now via Maniacs.
