Perth hardcore outfit Pincer+ have just released their long-awaited second EP, Hunting God Tapes. Vol 2: Romance via Greyscale Records.

Almost one year on from the release of their cult classic debut EP, Hunting God Tapes. Vol 1: Violence, Pincer+ return with the next chapter. Ripe with screaming guitars, live recorded drums and potent vocals, both singles – Visions Of Angels and Closer To God – welcomed listeners back into Pincer’s world of torment and prepared them for the sonic onslaught that is Vol. 2: Romance

"Thematically, 'Romance' goes back to the roots of it all - the source of the damage on Violence," tells producer, guitarist and songwriter Josh Ang. "Sonically it's angry. It's angry and violent and hurt and it's thrashed around under my skin for so many years in the making, waiting to be given a mouth to be heard. Personally, Romance is healing. Mistakes I’ve made, personified into something real and tangible as a reminder never to make them again."

The new collection is produced, written and recorded by guitarist and songwriter Josh Ang, with drum and vocals recorded at Perth’s Sumo Sound Studios (Shangrila, Voyager) and mix and mastering by George Lever of G1 Productions (Loathe, Thornhill, Pridelands).

Pincer+ sat down with Maniacs to shine a light on some of their favourite EPs from the last 15 years.

    1. END  - The Sin Of Human Frailty [2023]

"An unrelenting barrage of artful noise that’s full of catchy sections and hooks that have kept me coming back for more and more. Industrial elements, incredible production, and some of the craziest drumming I’ve ever heard. The Graphic Nature Audio team at their absolute best."

    2. Guilt Trip - Unrelenting Force [2016]

"It’s just straight up f***ing awesome; it’s fast and aggressive the whole way through (except for the interlude). From the very first song, I was hooked on this band. It was also a refreshing change up from what I was listening to at the time, and was the perfect work of music to hit my ears when I was going through a rough time."

    3. Dream On, Dreamer - Hope [2010]

"In my mind, this is an undeniable staple of Australian heavy music. Pivotal to my introduction to heavy music, this EP still holds up to this day - incredible songs, the production still lives up to modern standards, and probably the best sub drops ever put to tape????????????? I think so!"

    4. Lil Yachty - The Secret Recipe [2023]

"Yachty never really caught my ear until he started putting out his more recent content. Something about his transition from an internet joke into one of the best in the rap scene is so crazy to me. Sonically, I think this is just the perfect blend of new wave and old school influences."

    5. Bon Iver - ‘i,i’ [2019]

"This album is perfect in my opinion. It’s got such a crazy sound design the whole way through, and when paired with Justin’s voice, it just takes the top spot for me. Lyrically, sonically, and thematically, this album is perfect. I’ve never heard such an experimental sound design work in such a raw analog context."
