Prolific metalcore progressives ERRA have released a brand new full-length CURE. The band's sixth album highlights and expands on the forward-thinking sound and guitar-driven style the band has built its reputation on. Following 2021's self-titled release, CURE is a stunning execution of both raw talent and surgical technicality.  To celebrate the release of this sonic thrill ride of a record, "we caught up with vocalist J.T. Cavey for a chat about his favourite songs from across ERRA's career.

My Favourite ERRA Songs with J.T.Cavey

"This one is so hard, especially as we get deeper and deeper into these catalogues. I’ll try to do one from each album. I love Seven from Impulse (2011) both Rebirth and Ultraviolet from Augment (2013), and then Ghosts of Nothing for Neon (2018)."

"Oh man, Drift (2016) is a tough one–maybe Sleeper? That was one of the first songs I ever wrote for or contributed my own lyrics for the band, and the lyrical topic has a very personal connection, so I’m incredibly proud of that one."

"I think Eidolon from our self-titled (2021), is underrated, too. And then Wave from the new record [Cure (2024)]. I think Wave was also a potential album title, as they’re all whole four-letter words (laughs)."

    Most/least played ERRA songs

On Ultraviolet being one of ERRA’s Top 10 least played songs

"I do this all the time with my Spotify [plays], and there was one year where Ultraviolet was my most played song, only because I had to learn it (laughs). So Ultraviolet being in our bottom 10 is an absolute travesty because it’s such a good song!"

On ERRA’s Top 5 most played songs:  Hybrid Earth, Irreversible, Skyline, Drift, and Breach

"I mean, they’re great songs. What happens, as well, is we’ll fall in love with a song, play the shit out of it, and then get sick of it (laughs). Breach was the most recent one. We were like, ‘Please, God, can we take this out of the set?’ And Snow Blood will probably eventually be that song as well. But Jesse (Cash, guitars/clean vocals) was like, ‘Yeah, that one’s never going away” (laughs). But I mean, this happens all the time, too, though. Because we’ll take songs set, and then we’ll throw it back in and be like, ‘Damn that song. I forgot about that one.’"

On their cover of Muse's Stockholm Syndrome from the deluxe version of ERRA

"That’s been going over way better than I ever thought it would be. I really never expected it to be so high in our most played songs on streaming services, but it really did. When we were going to look for singles or covers to do, we looked at songs that would translate well from an ERRA standpoint. I mean, that intro riff is so shreddy–it’s so cool.

Not that I would ever really associate Muse’s vocalist [Matt Bellamy] with Jesse (Cash, guitars/clean vocals)’s voice. But whenever I heard that [song], I was like, ‘Oh, Jesse could do this.’ The nuance to [Matt Bellamy]’s singing is great, kind of like what Chris Cornell has, but in his own way. I never thought we would be a cover band, especially putting it in the live set. Like, if you told me four years ago that we would record a cover and we would play it live, I’d be like, ‘No fucking way’ (laughs). I just didn't think we were that band. I love covers, and I love it when bands do covers–I've never been against it. I just didn’t think that would be something that the rest of the camp would agree on. I think we had to be shown. We had to put it out, try it, and then find out that we were wrong, and everyone loved it."

If he had to choose another song for ERRA to cover

"Oh, dude, they’re fucked. They don’t wanna know (laughs). I would do like Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, or Disturbed. I would lose my mind if I got to do a Chevelle Still Running cover, or Easier to Run-era Linkin Park. Like, Jesse (Cash, guitars/clean vocals) doing Chester [Bennington]’s parts and me doing some sort of like tough screaming version of Mike Shinoda? I think that'd be sick. ‘A metal band covering Linkin Park? Oh, no, not another one’ (laughs). I’d still do it, I just I don’t know if we if ever will."

Cure is out now on UNFD.
