Who else can’t wait forDevilDriver to tear it up on theirAustralian tour this September?! Front manDez Fafara caught up withThe AU Review to talk about the tour, who his influences are and what he’s listening to at the moment!

I will concentrate on Devildriver during this interview but I was hoping you would indulge me with a few introductory questions. Who were your influences growing up?

Well I mean, I grew up on everything. I got into my parents’ record collection early so that stuff turned me on toSteppenwolfandThe Doorsand all the old 60s acid stuff that they were listening to. From there, a lot of my youth was very much formed by punk rock and psychobilly soBlack Flag,The Germs,Circle JerksandDead Kennedys. A lot of psychobilly stuff The Cramps, a lot of just different rockabilly, old rockabilly likeGene Vincentetc got me into blues, likeMuddy Watersand Howling Wolf.

My musical taste is massively varied and the Goth scene did not escape me either. I really fell in love withBauhaus,Nick Cave,The Cure,Depeche Mode… the range of music that I listen to which is very, very wide. As a matter of fact, people when they come back here before the shows, we’re always jamming music and having a cocktail and they’ll be really surprised to hear it go fromMotrhead, toB52sto rock metal. You know, I listen to everything.

Is there anyone in particular you really like at the moment?

There are so many bands out there. I mean I like all the bands on the tour at the moment, not to push who we’re out with now but there’s a band calledFit For An Autopsyand they’re just crazy. I had the singer ride with me the other night and hes such a great guy. We’re both freemasons so we had a lot to talk about. And a band calledRevocation. They’re crazy, they have so much skill. They are the most skilled players I’ve seen in years. You know there’s a band from Australia that I’ve really been into, I was turned onto them byPhil Anselmo-Portal. They’re incredible. I really like the stuff they’re doing; they’re really artistic and out there and doing their own things. People know that it’s okay to approach me and give me a demo to listen to, and I will.

What advice would you give new bands?

My first piece of advice is: be in love with your instrument. My second piece of advice is: Try to write good songs whatever it is you’re doing punk rock, blues, metal, whatever it is you do. Don’t ever let the five things that’ll mess you up do so. You know: ego, money, drugs, alcohol, and I’d hate to say this but sometimes a bad woman can mess everything up. If some guy has an awful girlfriend who is always around, then it messes with the band. So you’ve got to keep your head together, keep wits about you. Yes, it’s artistic but it’s also a business. I’m savvy, I’m business-minded but as well, when it’s time for me to do my art, to let my artistic side shine, then those around me who are there to do the business know to leave me alone and let me do my art which is cool they let me be artistic. So there’s my advice, and always work a back-up plan. I always worked another job and had a back-up plan. I think it’s important.

Is that so you’re not reliant on it and don’t make bad decisions due to necessity?

Yes, you can’t be reliant on it, at first, and especially now in this industry. I’m talking underground bands. I’m not talking pop bands obviously. I’m talking your blues, punk, metal, anything underground. Try to get the support of those around you and if they don’t support you then it’s their problem, not yours. I mean that’s how I lost my first wife, due to that. She said,‘If you go on tour, I’m going to leave you’ I left on tour and there you go, she left me. You’ve only got one life, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do for you.

Having been to Australia before, what are your impressions?

I have a lot of friends in Australia and I love coming down there. I’ve travelled all around the world but I really do like it there. I’m from California and the minute I land, it’s very familiar. I surf so when I get some time off, I try to surf there. I do have a lot of friends there. I have a great time there. It’s almost like a vacation, but we get to play shows.

Finally, what can audiences expect from Devildriver in Australia?

We’ve been on fire as of late. They’re going to be surprised. They’re going to get 120%. We’re coming with a full production, which should be great. We’re coming with a great package. Come on in the pit and come groove with us.
