Last night saw Norwegian hard rock/punk/metal/who-gives-a-shit band Kvelertak took to the stage of the Corner Hotel in Melbourne. It was my first Kvelertak outing and boy was it off the chain. Just plain, straight up, no shit rock and fucking roll.

Frontman, Erlendarrives on stage with a jaw dropping owl mask like something from The Fourth Kind! As far as frontmen go he is one of the most infectious I have ever laid eyes on. Fist pumping air drums, gnarly growls, chest-bearing and just simply couldn’t give a flying one. That’s what makes these guys so damn good. Their overwhelming ability to bring cool to a whole new level without even breaking sweat. Literally speaking that is. There are small lagoons forming on stage after an hour of their searing riffs and Viking curses!

From Erlend, a hairy, brutal-ass dude to Marvin a blonde punk kid covered in tatts to Bjarte a typical Scandinavian dude, the band scream diversity and that is rad as hell.Another distinctly well-worked element to their show is the set listing and the fantastically arranged climax they sculpt throughout the gig.

Oh and Vidarthe keyboardist fractured his knee at the last show. And still played this one. In a wheelchair. That really does sum Kvelertak up. Brimming with charisma, energy and attitude. And with a undying passion for rock music.

I’d heard all about their live fanatics prior to the show but they beat any expectation I had into a pulp with a blunt bearded axe. If they are ever within a vicinity of 200 miles then you should walk, run, hitchhike, bike, just do anything you can to be there. It will be the best decision you’ve ever made.
