Modern prog-rock juggernauts Muse have a reputation for doing what you least expect them to do. They've lived up to that reputation over the weekend by covering Slipknot's Duality live. The unexpected cover came at their Isle Of Wight Festival set. At the end of a crushing rendition of their recent single Won't Stand Down, Muse tear into their take on Slipknot's monster Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses  hit. Watch the carnage take place for yourself in the fan footage below.

The Slipknot cover was one of a number of diverse cover selections to get a run during Muse's two-night stand at festival. Other songs to feature were AC/DC's Back In Black, Rage Against The Machine's Know Your Enemy, Jimi Hendrix's Foxy Lady and Guns N' Roses Sweet Child O' Mine

Muse are on tour promoting their new album Will Of The People which will drop on August 26th via Warner Records.  The Grammy Award-winning prog rockers recently dropped the titular track from their forthcoming full-length. The the third song to be released from Will Of The People,  following Compliance and Won't Stand DownWill Of The People was produced by Muse and mixed by Serban Ghenea and is an electric anthem that showcases the band’s prowess for storytelling and sonic scene creation. Today the band also shared the accompanying video directed by award-winning animator and producer Tom Teller.

Matt Bellamy says: “‘Will of the People’ is fictional story set in a fictional metaverse on a fictional planet ruled by a fictional authoritarian state run by a fictional algorithm manifested by a fictional data centre running a fictional bank printing a fictional currency controlling a fictional population occupying a fictional city containing a fictional apartment where a fictional man woke up one day and thought ‘fuck this.’"

Bellamy shared some insight into the artistic process behind and intention of Will Of The People which is due to drop August 26th via Warner Records.

'''Will Of The People' was created in Los Angeles and London and is influenced by the increasing uncertainty and instability in the world.  A pandemic, new wars in Europe, massive protests & riots, an attempted insurrection, Western democracy wavering, rising authoritarianism, wildfires and natural disasters and the destabilization of the global order all informed 'Will Of The People'.  It has been a worrying and scary time for all of us as the Western empire and the natural world, which have cradled us for so long are genuinely threatened.  This album is a personal navigation through those fears and preparation for what comes next.”

Of course with Muse being Muse, there is a lot of sonic exploration as well, with no bowing to any singular genre on Will Of The People.  The album’s title track Will Of The People brings playful provocation to a dystopian glam-rocker while there is an innocence and a purity to the nostalgic electronic textures of Verona. From the visceral thrill of Won’t Stand Down, to the industrial-tinged, granite heavy riffs of Kill Or Be Killed, or the lightning-bolt rush of Euphoria, the album concludes with the frenetic finale of the brutally honest We Are Fucking Fucked.

Will Of The People was produced by Muse. Key collaborators include mixing on eight tracks by the multiple Grammy Award winner Serban Ghenea; mixing from Dan Lancaster on Won’t Stand Down, and additional mixing on Kill Or Be Killed from Aleks von Korff.
