The '90s grunge vibes are well and truly back in fashion and now members of three of the era's biggest acts, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam have got in on the act, establishing the supergroup 3rd Secret.
Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron combine their significant musical forces on the debut album by 3rd Secret. Three of Seattle's best team up with Bubba DuPree (VOID), Jennifer Johnson, and Jillian Raye (Novoselic's project Giants In The Trees) on 3rd Secret's self-titled debut album.

The release seems to have taken the world by surprise, with 3rd Secret having kept things pretty secretive prior to release. What we do know thanks to the credits listed on the band’s official website is that Novoselic and Cameron are among the primary songwriters of the entire 11-track album and that Jack Endino, who famously worked on Nirvana’s Bleach, co-produced and mixed the album.
With all of the grunge and punk pedigree present, you'd be forgiven for expecting a dirty, gritty offering that plays on the quiet/loud dynamics that each member's most notable work thrives on, but despite some signature tones and musical idiosyncracies, for the most part, 3rd Secret doesn't sound all that like the music that made them all so famous, with most tracks sitting more in the adult contemporary or alt-country soundscape.
For those somehow unfamiliar with each member's legacy, Krist Novoselic co-founded Nirvana with Kurt Cobain in 1987. He was and forever will be their only bass player. Kim Thayil co-founded Soundgarden with Chris Cornell in 1984. He was the lead guitarist on every Soundgarden album. Matt Cameron actually played the drums for both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, having been behind the kit of every Soundgarden album as well as serving as Pearl Jam's drummer since Soundgarden's first breakup in 1997, he remains their drummer to this day.
3rd Secret is Thayil and Cameron's first release together since Soundgarden's final record King Animal dropped in 2012.
