Make Them Suffer Answer Your Questions

Sean Harmanis and Nick McLernon from Aussie metal outfit Make Them Suffer have been getting busy this morning taking part in a Reddit AMA over on r/Metalcore, answering questions from their fans across the globe!

We picked out some of the best bits for your convenience, but you can check out the whole thing over here.

    Imatomat:
Whats your new album called and when does it come out?

JK, In all seriousness whats going on with Louisa, is she just retiring from playing shows or out all together.

    Sean Harmanis:
All I can say is that that the album will be coming out at some point during the US summer. Louisa is now on a hiatus from Make Them Suffer. Given that we don't get paid in MTS at this stage; she had finished her degree and had to utilise it. So she couldn't really "pay the bills" and put her degree to use whilst touring 6 months of the year. She's accepted a contract teaching at a school and she's happy there for now so that's that! :)

    Aeslos:
Could you describe the vocal evolution of your band? When you listen to Neverbloom it's a clear Deathcore style with crushing lows and inspiring highs. But with Old Souls mid screams are way more present and there's a clear shift in the sound. Is that just weariness from so much of it or did you go for a different sound?

Also, I'm definitely one to favor your deathcore side. So would you say this new record is more reminiscent of Neverbloom or Old Souls?

Edit: I'm wearing an MTS shirt today. Total coincidence! =D

    Sean Harmanis:
I want to clarify, anyone that says that I have damaged my throat and that's why I don't do highs and lows anymore is just lying. I've seen people post comments about this kind of thing on youtube as if it's a fact and they're in the know. My range is still the same in fact it's even better, my gutturals are now way deeper and more powerful than ever before. I just happen to find that focusing more on diction, phrasing, and the emotion or cadence put into each take is way more rewarding and simply sounds better than going just high and low all the time. That to me is repetitive and doesn't resonate well with me on an emotional level. However, there definitely is a time and a place!

There will be a couple of songs more up that alley, but for the most part I wouldn't really compare this album to Neverbloom or Old Souls! it's it's own thing, just like each of those are.

    nohitter21:
How do you feel about bands such as Bring Me the Horizon going from deathcore to metalcore to alternative rock? Would you say that they're selling out or is it alright to want that larger fanbase at the cost of your original sound?

    Nick McLernon:
To me the idea of "selling out" seems like a mundane concept. If you are an artist true to your music, you will keep writing music and releasing records that satisfies yourself. You can try and 'write' a marketable record, but chances are people will smell the cheese. A good artist will keep writing good music no matter how their songs change or styles develop. I think it is less a matter of opinion and more matter of fact to say BMTH are simply doing what they want to do

    Butt_Sex_Bill:
Any chance of going back to a heavier, more deathcore-ish sound like Neverbloom? And any more tours coming to the U.S.? You guys were the entire reason I went to Architects.

    Sean Harmanis:
I'd say there is a very high chance of doing that at some point in our career. There's still a trilogy to wrap up ;). The next album will NOT be like that though.

Whoa that's insane man, thanks for coming to see us! we will be back to the US sooner than expected, promise. :D

    BlueSkiesBlueSeas:
Hey guys, thanks for the AMA. Saw you a couple weeks ago in Atlanta and it was a great time. I have been listening to metalcore for over 10 years and I can honestly say that Old Souls is one of the most original, well-made albums I've heard in the genre. Keep up the good work.

If Louisa has left the band, do you plan to continue with keyboard and the symphonic elements that is part of your sound?

Does the song "Blood Moon" have any relation to the video game, Bloodborne?

    What inspired your band name?

How much does buying a t-shirt at a show help you guys? I wonder because I bought one at your show in Atlanta, despite my wife hating band merch t-shirts haha. I always tell her it's to help the bands out ;)

Looking forward to hearing some new music when you guys are ready to release it. If it's anything like "Ether," we are all in for something special. Take care guys.

    Sean Harmanis:
Thanks dude, absolutely it's our pleasure. haha sick that atlanta show was dope thank you for the kind words!

You won't even notice a difference in that particular department ;)

hrmm well I was playing bloodborne at the time, and I had definitely just watched some video explaining the storyline of bloodborne and the moon stuff. So i definitely thought that blood moons were sick as fuck at the time, hence the title. In terms of the lyrics though, I wouldn't say the game played an influence on that.

Much to my reluctance, a former member came up with the band name from a "rose funeral" lyric.

Buying a shirt helps particularly if we're on tour. what also helps is when we play a headliner show, making sure to turn up at that. that's how we're going to be able to grow is if people come to our shows :) Oh and buying CD's doesn't get us paid, but buying a cd (particularly in the first week of an album being out) gives us our number of sales on paper so that we can be all like "look how many cd's we sold" to industry folk, and then they'll want to work with us and help us grow and get on better tours etc etc.

So to conclude... Really, it all helps man! Thanks brother, all the best thanks for grabbing a shirt!

    LeLouchNexus:
Hey guys, unfortunately I haven't had much time to really get into your music yet, beyond Let Me In and Ether, which are honestly beautiful, so I was wondering: what would each of you say is your favourite song you've recorded, lyrically and musically?

I'm going to make some time tonight to check out your discography, because if Let Me In is anything to go by, I really like your style. Keep doing what you guys are doing!

    Sean Harmanis:
Well if you like those songs, you might enjoy a track off our first album called "Elegies", "Old Souls" might be up your alley too but i think you might enjoy just the general "vibe" of our album old souls a little better. My favourite song lyrically would be between: Marionette, Let Me In, Neverbloom & Elegies. Musically would definitely be Ether.

    DinizDude:
The Aussie scene is just fucking fantastic right now (from an overseas perspective), what are some hidden local gems that aren't as big as you think they should be?

    Sean Harmanis:
    Some hidden up-and-comers from Aus:

Well the obvious ones for me are Ocean Grove, Trophy Eyes & Hellions. I actually froth those bands fairly heavily. Particularly Trophy Eyes.

On a smaller scale though, I think my favourite up-and-comers are Deadlights, Alpha Wolf and a band called Cursed Earth from our home town, Perth.
