Phil Anselmo performs next to Jerry Cantrell

It's time to open up that metal time capsule once again and take a trip back to 2006, when Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo joined Alice In Chains onstage to perform their track 'Would?' for a taping of the VH1 Classic series Decades Rock Live!.

Anselmo was, of course, performing vocals in place of Layne Staley, who had passed away from an overdose in 2002. Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell had also been infamously shot on stage in 2004, so both bands had seen their fair share of loss.

Also joining the ranks for the performance was Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, while Anselmo can be seen clutching his earpiece tight throughout the performance, leading us to believe he really wanted to do the song its due justice.

    Watch it below:

That same year, Metallica frontman James Hetfield also joined Alice In Chains onstage to perform 'Would?', but his voice wasn't quite as suited to the song. It really does put into perspective how amazing Layne Staley's vocals were, and it's pretty safe to say there will never be another Layne.

Listen to Alice In Chains now.
